Our faqs

Why is my boiler losing pressure, and how can I fix it?

Boiler pressure loss is usually caused by a leak in the system, either from a pipe or radiator valve, or the pressure relief valve in the boiler. You can repressurise the system using the filling loop, but if the pressure continues to drop, it’s important to have a qualified engineer inspect the system for leaks or faulty components.

Cold radiators can be caused by trapped air, sludge build-up, or an issue with the boiler or pump. Bleeding your radiators might solve air blockages, but if the problem persists, a power flush might be needed to remove sludge from the system. An engineer can also check the boiler’s pump or flow rate to ensure everything is working correctly.

Insulating your pipes is the best way to prevent freezing in cold weather. Keeping your heating on at a low temperature, even when you’re not home, can also help. If pipes do freeze, thaw them gently using a hairdryer or warm towels, and never apply direct heat. We can also offer advice on preventive measures, like installing frost protection thermostats.

For energy efficiency, set your boiler’s water temperature to around 60°C and your central heating temperature between 18°C and 21°C. This will ensure your home is warm enough without wasting energy. For further optimisation, we can install a smart thermostat that adjusts heating according to your daily routine.

Discoloured or smelly water is usually caused by corrosion in your heating system, particularly in older systems. Rust build-up in pipes or tanks can contaminate your water. It could also indicate bacterial growth in water tanks. You should call an engineer to flush the system and check for any corroded components or water hygiene issues.

Banging or gurgling sounds, also known as “kettling,” usually indicate a build-up of limescale or sludge in the boiler’s heat exchanger, restricting water flow. This causes water to overheat and boil, creating the noise. An engineer can flush the system and, if necessary, install a scale reducer or magnetic filter to prevent further build-up.
